One Bad Inning For Durbin Keeps IronPigs Scuffling
|
One swing was all it took to send the IronPigs into another six-game losing streak as Lehigh Valley was downed by the Syracuse Chiefs, 4-2 and are now 2-17 in their inaugural season. Chiefs CF Buck Coats’ three-run blast off of J.D. Durbin proved to be the difference maker as Syracuse was victorious over the Phillies Triple-A affiliate for the sixth straight time dating back to last season.
The IronPigs, who have seen tremendous pitching over the last three days, was only able to piece four hits together against Syracuse who have now won seven consecutive games and are winners of nine of their last 10 ballgames.
Durbin (0-4) ran into trouble from the onset when he walked the first two batters he faced and uncorked a wild pitch before allowing an RBI single to LF Adam Lind. The Lehigh Valley starter settled into a groove from their and sat down 13 straight batters after falling behind 1-0.
But then with one out in the fifth, Durbin put two one for Coats who deposited the righthader’s offering over the right field wall to make it a four-run game. It was the first of the year for the Chiefs’ leadoff hitter who now has four RBIs against Lehigh Valley. Durbin is still winless for Lehigh Valley after allowing all four runs on four hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Meanwhile, the bats did very little against Syracuse starter Davis Romero who allowed just two baserunners while striking out four over four innings.
The IronPigs would finally break through in the seventh thanks to a bout of wildness by Chiefs’ reliever Brandon League. League walked the first three batters of the inning before being lifted for former Cincinnati Red lefty Mike Gosling. Jason Jaramillo drove in the IronPigs’ first run with a sacrifice fly and 3B Brennan King followed with a sharp single to center that scored Andy Tracy to cut the Syracuse lead in half.
Jaramillo had Lehigh Valley’s only extra-base hit when he doubled in the ninth inning with two outs but was stranded when King lined out to the shortstop Jorge Velandia to end the game. Gosling (3-1) earned the win with Jordan De Jong picking up his second save in as many chances against the IronPigs.
Game four will be another afternoon tilt from Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y. with first pitch schedule for 2:00 p.m. Matt Provence will bring all the action from upstate New York beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the AT&T pre-game show on flagship station 90.3 FM WXLV and 95.1 HD-2 WZZO, “The Digital Home of the IronPigs.”
