Phillies Promote Carrasco to Lehigh Valley

PHILLIES PROMOTE CARRASCO TO LEHIGH VALLEY
21-Year-Old Expected to Start Sunday against Rochester at Coca-Cola Park
RHP Carlos Carrasco, the top prospect in the Phillies organization according to Baseball America, has been promoted to Lehigh Valley and will make his Triple-A debut Sunday at Coca-Cola Park against Rochester.  Carrasco replaces Les Walrond, who was promoted to Philadelphia when Phillies reliever Rudy Seanez was placed on the disabled list.
Only general admission seats remain for Sunday’s 5:35 p.m. game against Rochester at Coca-Cola Park.  Tickets can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park Ticket Office, online at ironpigsbaseball.com or by calling (610) 841-PIGS.
Carrasco, signed out of Venezuela in 2003 at the age of 16, began the season with Double-A Reading and went 7-7 with a 4.32 ERA in 20 games.  He had allowed just 109 hits in 114.2 innings while striking out 109 and walking 45.
In 2006, the 21-year-old captured the Paul Owens Award, awarded to the top pitcher in the system, and helped guide Low-A Lakewood to a South Atlantic League Championship.  That season, he went 12-6 with a 2.26 ERA and finished third in the league in both ERA (2.26) and strikeouts (159).
Carrasco has been named to the World Team of the All-Star Futures game each of the last three seasons and was the starting pitcher in this year’s contest held at Yankee Stadium on July 13.  He was also selected as a midseason and postseason All-Star with Lakewood in 2006 and a midseason All-Star with Clearwater in 2007.
Overall, in 102 minor league games spanning five seasons, he has totaled a 37-33 mark with a 4.08 ERA (545.0 ip, 489 h, 271 r, 247 er, 227 bb, 464 k).
Carrasco fills the roster spot formerly possessed by Les Walrond, who led the International League with a 2.61 ERA at the time of his promotion.  Moreover, the 31-year-old had not allowed an earned run in 29.0 consecutive innings.  On July 6, Walrond tossed the first nine-inning shutout in IronPigs history and struck out 17 batters – the highest total in both Major and Minor League Baseball this season.
The IronPigs open a three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday evening at Coca-Cola Park.  Only general admission tickets remain for each of the first two games of the series.
Single-game tickets and group tickets for the IronPigs inaugural season, presented by Capital BlueCross, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park Ticket Office, online at www.ironpigsbaseball.com or by calling (610) 841-PIGS.
