Red Wings Sweep Up IronPigs 3-2, 5-0

RED WINGS SWEEP UP IRONPIGS 3-2, 5-0
Lehigh Valley Shutout for the First Time Since April 29
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs’ early August swoon continued Wednesday night as the team was swept in their doubleheader with Rochester dropping game one 3-2 followed by a 5-0 blanking in the nightcap.  It’s the first time in the history of the franchise Lehigh Valley had lost both ends of a twinbill and the team has now lost six of seven to fall to 49-70 in their inaugural season.
In the opening act, Luke Hughes delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 8th that scored Alejandro Machado with the winning run as IronPigs right-hander J.D. Durbin fell to 0-7 this season at the Triple-A level.  He came in for starter Kris Benson who went the first six innings and allowed six hits, two runs, only one of which was earned while not walking a batter and striking out three.  In his last four games, the rehabbing righty has ERA of 2.08 (26 IP, 6 ER) but only has one win to show for it.
Jon Knott hit his 17th home run of the season in a losing effort.  Trevor Plouffe went deep for his fifth of the year for Rochester who has won 10 of 15 meetings with the IronPigs this season.
In the nightcap, the IronPigs were shutout victims for the first time in 93 games as they were unable to figure out Red Wings starter Tom Shearn (7-2) in the seven-inning contest.  The 34-year-old right-hander surrendered just two hits and struck out eight in a near flawless performance against Lehigh Valley.  Meanwhile, Gary Knotts allowed five runs on six hits including a two-run homer by Garrett Jones to fall to 2-4 in 10 starts for the IronPigs.
The Red Wings left-fielder had three hits in the game, all for extra-bases, including a 1st inning RBI double that turned out to be the game-winning hit.  Rochester also received an RBI double from centerfielder Jason Pridie and scored their final run in the 5th on a sac fly by Machado.
Brandon Watson (Top 3rd) and T.J. Bohn (Top 5th) each doubled in the game representing the only hits charged to Shearn on Wednesday night.  After scoring two runs in the top of the 2nd inning of Game one, the IronPigs went scoreless against Rochester pitching for the final 13 innings of the doubleheader.  The last time an IronPigs team was shutout in a ballgame was back on April 29 at home against Syracuse when they were blanked by David Purcey and the Chiefs, 1-0.
Dave Huppert’s club will try to salvage a win in their final trip to Frontier Field this season when LHP Travis Blackley (5-8, 4.80) takes on RHP Philip Humber (7-7, 5.05) of the Red Wings, Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
Matt Provence will have all the action from Thursday’s finale beginning at 6:35 p.m. with the AT&T pre-game show on flagship station 90.3 FM WXLV and 95.1 HD-2 WZZO, “The Digital Home of the IronPigs.”
Lehigh Valley returns home on Friday, August 8 at 7:05 to begin a four-game series against the Buffalo Bisons from Coca-Cola Park. There will be another Friday Night Fireworks show presented by Chevrolet at the conclusion of the series opener against the Bisons. Friday will also be a historic night in the Lehigh Valley when the IronPigs host their first-ever ballpark wedding at Coca-Cola Park.
Single-game and group tickets for the IronPigs inaugural season, presented by Capital BlueCross, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park Ticket Office, online by CLICKING HERE or by calling (610) 841-PIGS.
