PawSox Beat Pigs 5-2 In Afternoon Action

PawSox Beat Pigs 5-2 In Afternoon Action
PawSox 1B Jeff Natale and RF Chip Ambres Each Drive in Two
The IronPigs failed to deliver a win against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday afternoon, as they fell by a score of 5-2 at McCoy Stadium. Pawtucket, who dropped the opener yesterday, made up for it with solid pitching and ten hits from their offense to beat the IronPigs for the first time this season.
IronPigs right fielder Jeremy Slayden, who started in place of  John Mayberry, launched his first career Triple-A home run in the top of the ninth, but it was too little to late, as the Sox held on for the win over the Pigs in game two of their four game series from Pawtucket.
Steve Green, who was a last minute addition to the game in place of starter Rodrigo Lopez, who was scratched from his start, took the ball for the ironPigs and had his troubles early on. In the bottom of the first, Green struggled with his control, walking three of the first four batters he faced.  With the bases loaded, RF Chip Ambres chipped in with a two-run single off the glove of Pigs 3B J.J. Furmaniak. Green would avoid trouble in the second inning and exit after just two innings. Lopez, who was scheduled to start, was scratched right before first-pitch for an undisclosed reason.
The Pigs got on the board in the top of the third when backup catcher Orlando Guevara would come through with his first Triple-A RBI. Guevara, started behind the plate to give Paul Hoover a day-off, lined an RBI single to center and put the IronPigs on the board and make it a 2-1 deficit.
In the bottom of the third, however, IronPigs reliever Jason Anderson, came on in his first inning out of the bullpen, and would face some early trouble, as a throwing error by 3B J.J. Furmaniak would give Pawtucket a runner on with just one out. And, after next batter Sean Danielson would single, the Pawsox were in business with two on and just one out. Although the next batter, Ivan Ochoa would hit in a 5-4 forceout, the Pawsox would add to their lead, on a wild pitch from Anderson, which would score Amgel Chavez from third, making it a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, it was Jeff Natale who would provide the offense. Natale doubled in two runs, and helped the Pawsox add to their lead, making it a 5-1 game at that point. The Pawtucket firstbaseman finished 2-4 with two RBI’s and also helped lead the way with his stellar play in the field.
Pawtucket reliever Jose Vaquedano tossed three shutout inning out of the pen to pick up his first win of the season. Vaquedano allowed just one hit, while fanning one batter and walking one in a solid effort out of the pen.
Green, who made the unexpected start, took the loss after allowing two runs in two innings. Green, who is back for his second tour of duty with the IronPigs, was signed by Philadelphia to a minor league deal on April 15.
The IronPigs will be back at it again tomorrow, as they will play game three of the four game series against Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium. Justin Lehr (1-0), will take the ball for the Lehigh Valley as they look to win their second game of the season against Pawtucket. On the hill for Pawtucket will be starter Enrique Gonzalez (1-0).
Matt Provence will have the call beginning at 12:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 as the IronPigs look to make it two straight.
