BAT'S FLY PAST 'PIGS AGAIN, WIN FINALE 7-4
Miguel Cairo Homers In The Third Inning For Lehigh Valley
BOX SCORE
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs had their troubles in Louisville again on Tuesday night, and luckily for them, they won't have to go their again in 2009.
The Louisville Bats completed a four-game sweep of the IronPigs on Tuesday evening by taking the finale of their four-game set by a score of 7-4 at Louisville Slugger Field in front of 9,928 fans.
After dropping the first three games of the series, the 'Pigs had a chance to halt their slide, and sent starter Carlos Carrasco to the hill, who was coming off his first victory on the season back on June. Carrasco, however, struggled on Tuesday evening.
The IronPigs scored first, courtesy of a John Mayberry sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, as the 'Pigs would have the 1-0 lead on the Bats, a lead that would not last very long.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Bats would begin their assault on the 'Pigs and Carrasco. Louisville would score a run in the bottom of the ninth, to tie the game, and then break-open the contest one inning later.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Louisville offense was at it again, as the speedy Norris Hopper would drive in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, which would make it a 2-1 Louisville lead. Next batter, Drew Sutton would take the Carrasco offering deep over the right field wall for a two-run shot, and the Bats were up at that point by a score of 4-1. The home run for Sutton was his third of the season.
In the top of the third inning, 'Pigs' 3B Miguel Cairo put the 'Pigs back on the board, and cut the Louisville lead in half with a solo homer, his third of the season, which would make it a 4-2 game. Cairo finished the game 3-4 with the home run, and has now hit safely in seventeen of his first nineteen games with the IronPigs.
Carrasco (1-7, 5.56) would have trouble retiring the Bats again, this time in the bottom of the third inning, when the 22-year-old would allow two more runs to plate. Craig Tatum, who had two hits in the game for the Bats, came through with a two-run single in the inning, to make it a 6-2 Louisville lead.
While Louisville would score one more run along the way -- a solo home run off the bat of Wes Bankston in the fifth inning -- Bats' starter Sam LeCure (3-5, 4.49) was phenomenal.
LeCure, a member of the Reds' 40-man roster, tossed eight solid innings on Tuesday. The 25-year-old righty allowed just two runs on just three hits, and fanned five in his longest outing of the season.
With the Bats ahead 7-2 in the top of the ninth inning, the 'Pigs would push across a couple of more runs against the Louisville bullpen. Louisville reliever Ben Jukich allowed a two-run double to 'Pigs 2B J.J. Furmaniak, which would make it a 7-4 game, and ultimately a 7-4 final.
The 'Pigs dropped all four games to the Bats in their series in Louisville, and return home on Thursday, after an off-day on Wednesday. The 'Pigs will send RHP Drew Carpenter (4-0, 2.92) to the hill. No word as of yet on the starter for Charlotte in the opener on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. on Star Wars Night at Coca-Cola Park.
Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer will have the call beginning at 6:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM. The game will also be televised along the IronPig Television Network powered by Service Electric Cable TV & Communications.
