Furmaniank's Single In Tenth Gives 'Pigs 3-2 Win

FURMANIAK LEADS 'PIGS TO 3-2 WIN IN TENTH
RHP Tyler Walker Notches First Win In 2009
J.J. Furmaniak stepped to the plate in the bottom of the tenth inning with a chance to help the IronPigs out in the win column.
With Miguel Cairo on second base, and just one out in the final inning, Furmaniak singled on a ground ball to left field to drive in the game's winning-run, and give Lehigh Valley a 3-2 win, becoming a hero in the process.
Mauled by his teammates on the field, Furmaniak's game-winner gave Lehigh Valley just their second win in extra frames this season (eight chances). Playing at second base for Pablo Ozuna -- who was suspended yesterday for 50 games -- Furmaniak hit the first pitch he saw from Charlotte reliever Adam Russell (0-2, 4.22) to lead the IronPigs to their second-straight victory over the Knights.
Starting the game for the newly-promoted Kyle Kendrick, LHP Jake Woods took the ball and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings for a no-decision. Woods, who was making just his fourth-spot start of the season, was pitching on just three days rest, after throwing 64 pitches on June 8 in Louisville. As a starter, Woods is now 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA (14 IP, 10 ER).
In the second inning, Woods allowed a leadoff single to Andy Phillips, and then a one-out double to Michael Restovich, which would put two runners on base for the Knights. Next batter Brian Myrow would groundout to 1B Andy Tracy, but Andy Phillips would come in to score from third and give the Knights a 1-0 lead. An inning later, the Knights would make it a 2-0 game thanks to a solo home run from catcher Donny Lucy, his first of the season.
The IronPigs (25-35) then scored two unanswered runs, one in the bottom of the third inning on a passed ball, which plated Mike Spidale, and the other one inning later, when Miguel Cairo and Paul Hoover hit back-to-back doubles. Hoover, filling in for the injured Lou Marson -- who was placed on the D.L. before the game with a right ankle contusion -- finished 1-3 with an RBI and a kay sacrifice bunt in the tenth inning, which set-up the game-winner by Furmaniak.
IronPigs' relievers combined to toss six shutout innings and allowed just two hits and two walks out of the bullpen on Friday evening. Francisco Butto tossed 1.1 shutout innings, Gary Majewski chipped in with 1.2 scoreless, Cedrick Bowers added two hitless frames, and Tyler Walker (2-1, 1.40) pitched the tenth to record the victory.
On Saturday evening, the IronPigs will send RHP Rodrigo Lopez (2-3, 4.76) to the mound. The Knights (26-34) will counter with RHP Justin Cassel (2-6, 4.84).
Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer will have the call beginning at 6:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM. The game will also be televised along the IronPig Television Network powered by Service Electric Cable TV & Communications.
