'Pigs Fall In Extras, Lose 3-2 To Chiefs

CHACIN SMOOTH, BUT CHIEFS PREVAIL IN TWELVE 3-2
LHP Gustavo Chacin Tosses Seven Solid Innings
BOX SCORE
Gustavo Chacin and the IronPigs needed a victory on Saturday evening -- unfortunately they didn't get their wish.
Chacin was sharp on the mound, but the bullpen blew the game twice, and the Syracuse Chiefs came away with a 3-2 victory on a game-winning RBI single in the twelfth inning off the bat of Kory Casto in front of 7, 577 fans on the fourth of July in Syracuse, NY.
Syracuse (44-36) got on the scoreboard first, and did so in the bottom of the second inning against Chacin and the IronPigs. With one out in the frame, Chacin allowed a solo home run to Casto, which gave the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage in the opening game of their three-game set. The home run for Casto, who finished with a big day at the plate, was his third of the season.
The IronPigs (39-44) finally came alive offensively in the top of the fourth inning when they got to Syracuse starter J.D. Martin, who was also solid on the evening. Martin, who tossed eight great innings, allowed two runs, one earned in the fourth inning.
In the fourth frame, Martin allowed bact-to-back single to Rich Thompson and Jason Ellison to begin the inning. Next batter Mike Cervenak, who was named to the I.L. All-Star team for the second-straight season as a member of the IronPigs, grounded out to second base, but Thompson scored to tie the game 1-1. Two batters later, SS Miguel Cairo broke the 1-1 tie with a single, and a fielding error by left fielder Corey Patterson allowed Ellison to score, and give Lehigh Valley a 2-1 lead.
Chacin, who allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings, got into trouble in the eighth inning. The lefty allowed a one-out triple to Padilla, and he was replaced by reliever Gary Majewski, who worked hard in the eighth frame. Majewski entered with a runner on third base, and just one out, but ended up stranding him at third after getting two  important outs.
In the ninth, Majewski, who was back on to shut the door, struggled, and allowed a leadoff double to Michael Morse -- putting the tying run on second base. Two batters later, Seth Bynum tripled in Morse, and the game was knotted up 2-2, and eventually on to extra innings at Alliance Bank Stadium.
In the bottom of the twelfth inning, 'Pigs reliever Jason Anderson (0-1, 2.88) was on to work the inning, but struggled. Anderson allowed a leadoff walk to Padilla, and four batters later, the game-winning single to Casto, which gave the Chiefs their third-straight win over the IronPigs.Lehigh Valley has now lost three-straight, and have gone just 5-5 in their last ten outings.
On Sunday, in game two, Lehigh Valley will look to RHP Kyle Kendrick (4-5, 3.77) to snap their three-game losing skid. Kendrick, will be opposed by Chiefs RHP Marco Estrada (5-2, 4.11).
Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer will have the call beginning at 4:30 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM.
