BOX SCORE
The good news for the IronPigs is that Thursday is their last game in Charlotte this season. The bad news is that when they enter play on Thursday, the Charlotte Knights will be going for the four-game sweep.
The IronPigs continued their tough series against the Knights, as Charlotte went on to beat the 'Pigs for the third-straight day, taking game three by a score of 5-3 in front of 3,415 fans at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, SC.
Charlotte (45-52) shutout the 'Pigs in the first two games of the series, and while they trailed 2-0 at one point in game three on Thursday, relied on solid pitching for the third-straight day. Charlotte starter Wes Whisler (6-8, 3.58) tossed seven solid innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits, and SS Brent Lillibridge helped out offensively in the game to beat the 'Pigs, and give Charlotte a chance for the four-game sweep on Thursday. Whisler, snapped his own personal two-game losing skid, and threw 92 pitches, 64 for strikes, in seven good innings.
Lillibridge, who has enjoyed a solid series at the plate against Lehigh Valley, ripped three hits in game three, a night after getting two hits on Tuesday afternoon. Along with Lillibridge, Knights' RF Josh Kroeger homered for the second-straight day, his thirteenth of the season. The Knights, who were outhit by the Knights, beat 'Pigs' starter Kyle Kendrick (6-6, 3.58).
Kendrick, who was originally slated to start game two on Tuesday, took the hill in game three on Wednesday, but struggled against the Knights. Kendrick, a member of the Phillies' 40-man roster, allowed five runs on nine hits in 7 and 1/3 innings, and lost for the first time since June 30. A native of Houston, TX, Kendrick walked none, while fanning just two batters.
The 'Pigs who scored for the first-time in this series during a two-run second inning on Wednesday, have now scored just three runs in the last twenty-seven innings. In the top of the second inning, the IronPigs belted out three doubles, to score their first two runs in eighteen and 2/3 innings. Miguel Cairo and Lou Marson hit back-to-back doubles to give the 'Pigs a 2-0 lead at that point.
The Knights quickly came back with a four-run third inning against Kendrick and the 'Pigs. Lillibridge hit a two-run single to tie the game, and Kroeger then added a two-run homer to give the Knights the 4-2 lead.
Lehigh Valley (47-50) added one more run in the game and did so in the top of the eighth inning, to cut the lead to just one. 'Pigs' DH Mike Cervenak singled home Michael Taylor, to make it a 4-3 deficit, but the 'Pigs failed to score again. Cervenak finished 1-4 with the RBI, while Taylor finished 1-4 with a double and a run scored.
On Thursday, in the finale of their four-game set, the IronPigs will send LHP Gustavo Chacin (4-3, 3.73) to the hill, as they look to avoid the four-game sweep. Chacin and the IronPigs will face Charlotte RHP Jack Egbert (6-3, 3.39).
Matt Provence will have the call beginning at 6:45 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM.
