'PIGS FALL TO RED WINGS 4-3 ON SUNDAY
Steve Tolleson Rips Game-Winning RBI Single In Ninth
BOX SCORE
Gustavo Chacin was in line for his franchise-record fifth straight win -- unfortunately, the IronPigs bullpen had a meltdown.
'Pigs reliever Gary Majewski allowed a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the eighth and reliever Jack Taschner allowed a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 4-3 in game two of their four-game series from Rochester, NY on Sunday evening.
Rochester left fielder Steve Tolleson homered in the bottom of the third inning and ripped the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, to help lead the Red Wings to the victory on Sunday. Tolleson, the son of former New York Yankee Wayne Tolleson, finished the game 2-5 at the plate, but more importantly ripped the game-winner off Taschner (0-2, 2.61), who entered in the ninth.
Chacin, a native of Venezuela, was solid over seven frames on Sunday and was in line for a franchise-high fifth-straight win. The former Toronto Blue Jays' starter, Chacin allowed just two runs on eight hits over seven and left with a 3-2 'Pigs lead, but the bullpen struggled to hold the lead.
Majewski, the first reliever in out of the bullpen for manager Dave Huppert, allowed a leadoff ground-rule double to Jose Morales to start the eighth frame. Next batter, 2009 All-Star Justin Huber, moved Morales to third with a ground ball to short and the tying run was just 90 feet away. Two batters later, Danny Valencia tied the game with an RBI single and Majewski was charged with his fourth blown save of the season.
Lehigh Valley failed to score in the top of the ninth inning off of Rochester reliever Rob Delaney (5-2, 3.45). Delaney, a native of Westwood, New Jersey, retired the side in order in the ninth and helped the 'Wings go to the bottom of the ninth with a chance to win the game -- which they did against Taschner and the 'Pigs.
The loss for Lehigh Valley overshadowed a nicely pitched game by Chacin and a good offensive performance from third baseman Terry Tiffeee, who launched his fourth home run of the season in a three-run sixth inning. Tiffee finished the game 1-4 with the home run and two RBI's against his former team.
On Monday night, the IronPigs and Red Wings will do battle in game three of their four-game set from Frontier Field. Lehigh Valley will send LHP Joe Savery to the mound, as he makes his Triple-A debut. Savery, who was recently promoted from Reading (AA), will face-off against Rochester LHP Reid Santos (1-3, 4.16).
Matt Provence will have the call beginning at 6:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM.
