Taylor Hits First 'Pigs' Cycle, Win 10-9 In Ten

TAYLOR HITS FOR CYCLE, 'PIGS WIN 10-9 IN TEN
Miguel Cairo Hit Game-Winner In Bottom Of Tenth
BOX SCORE
Lehigh Valley needed a win against Louisville -- what they got on Wednesday night was not only the win they desired, but a game that will go down in Coca-Cola Park history as one of the most memorable ever. After falling to the Bats in all six games played this season, Lehigh Valley needed a hero -- they got two on Wednesday.
Michael Taylor hit for the cycle, Miguel Cairo ripped the game-winning hit in the bottom of the tenth inning, and Lehigh Valley finally beat the Louisville Bats with a 10-9 victory in ten innings at Coca-Cola Park on Wednesday evening.
Taylor, a 2009 Eastern League All-Star, enjoyed a career day at the plate on Wednesday night. After starting the day with a .247 batting average, Taylor went 5-5 with 4 RBI's to improve his batting average by almost 40 points and in the process, he hit the first-ever cycle in Lehigh Valley IronPigs history -- not too shabby.
The game, which was delayed for twenty-eight minutes at the start, was well worth the wait for the 9,661 fans in attendance -- Taylor was reason number one. A product of Stanford University, Taylor was everything you could have asked for at the plate on Wednesday night. The 6'6, 260 pound outfielder had two doubles, a triple, two runs scored, and of course a mammoth home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, which gave the 'Pigs life -- the homer gave the 'Pigs a chance for at least another inning.
In bottom of the tenth frame, with Lehigh Valley and Louisville locked at 9-9, the offense battled. Bat's reliever Sean Watson, who made his first appearance in the series, allowed a leadoff single to 'Pigs' catcher Kevin Nelson, which ignited the inning for Lehigh Valley. Next batter laid down a pefect sacrifice bunt, but Watson made a costly throwing error, which allowed both runners to be safe. Now, with runners on the corners and nobody out, Jason Ellison flew to shallow right field, too short to score Nelson from third.
Miguel Cairo, a member of the Phillies' opening day roster, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the tenth with a chance to win the game for the 'Pigs. With a drawn-in infield and a chance to send the game into another inning, Louisville needed to get an out -- what they got, however was their worst nightmare. Cairo ripped a single up the middle off Watson (0-1, 0.00) for the game-winning hit and gave the 'Pigs their first win in seven tries -- a 10-9 victory in ten innings.
While both Cairo and Taylor were exceptional on Wednesday, Lehigh Valley got a shutout inning in the tenth from reliever Cedrick Bowers (4-2, 1.99), who notchedhis first win since July 25. Bowers was the fifth pitcher on the night for Lehigh Valley -- the fourth in relief of starter Gustavo Chacin, who struggled on Wednesday.
Chacin, who was making his fourteenth start of the season for Lehigh Valley, allowed six earned runs on seven hits in just four and 1/3 innings. A native of Venezuela, entered Wednesday's contest with a 5-0 mark and a 2.82 ERA over his last six outings.
While both Cairo and Taylor excelled at the plate in game three, the IronPigs combined to belt out fifteen hits as a team. Ellison, who finished 2-5 with two runs, an RBI and a walk, was one of the other stars of the game for the 'Pigs. 'Pigs second baseman J.J. Furmaniak also roped two hits for Lehigh Valley (57-60), who are now 1-6 against the Bats in 2009.
On Thursday in the finale, Lehigh Valley will send young lefty Joe Savery (2-0, 2.45) to the hill. Taking the ball for Louisville on Thursday, will be LHP Ben Jukich (7-5, 4.04).
Join Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer who will have the call beginning at 6:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM. The game will also be televised along the IronPig Television Network powered by Service Electric Cable TV & Communications.
