BOX SCORE
With a win on Monday, the 2009 Lehigh Valley IronPigs guaranteed themselves a winning season against the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2009 -- this coming just one season after finishing 1-15 against them in 2008.
Drew Carpenter tossed seven solid inning, Andy Tracy ripped three hits and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 4-1 in the opening game of their two-game series from Coca-Cola Park on Monday evening.
Carpenter (11-5, 3.23) was superb over seven innings, en route to his team-high eleventh win of the season and he now has the most wins in IronPigs history, surpassing Brian Mazone (Mazone had nine in 2008 and one in 2009).The winning pitcher of the 2009 I.L. All-Star game, Carpenter allowed just one run on six hits on Monday. A native of Oregon, Carpenter also walked two batters and fanned four.
The PawSox got on the scoreboard first in the opener and did so in the top of the fourth inning against Carpenter. The Sox put runners on first and second with two outs for Dusty Brown, who singled in the game's first run of the evening, giving Pawtucket a 1-0 lead.
One inning later, the IronPigs tied the game against Pawtucket starter Michael Bowden. Jason Ellison, who finished 1-3 with an RBI, hit a sacrifice fly, which scored J.J. Furmaniak from third base, to make it a 1-1 game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, John Mayberry ripped a go-ahead RBI double off Pawtucket reliever TJ Large (3-3, 5.14), which gave the 'Pigs a 2-1 advantage. Large, a native of Florida, allowed two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, courtesy of a Tracy two-run single. Tracy finished 3-4 with two RBI's on Monday.
Now, with the IronPigs ahead 4-1, relievers jack taschner and Steven Register combined on two shutout frames to keep the lead intact. Taschner worked a perfect eighth inning, fanning two batters and Register worked a perfect ninth to record his seventh save of the season.
Taking the ball for the 'Pigs in the finale of their two game series on Tuesday will be RHP Kyle Kendrick (8-7, 3.38). On the mound for the Sox in the finale will be RHP Adam Mills (1-1, 3.27).
Matt Provencene and Jon Schaeffer will have the call beginning at 6:35 p.m. for the AT&T pre-game show on the IronPigs Radio Network, ESPN Radio 1230-1320 AM.
